Facial muscles are a bit different
Expression muscles attach directly to skin, so contracting them moves the face itself. They are small, finely controlled, and habit-driven — which is why the gap between a well-used side and an underused side becomes visible.
What research says
Studies are few and small, but instructive: some report increased cheek muscle thickness and a more youthful appearance after weeks of consistent exercise, and facial-muscle training is standard practice in facial-palsy rehabilitation. Muscles clearly respond to training.
However, large trials specifically on asymmetry correction are lacking. Treat dramatic before-after marketing with healthy skepticism.
What you can expect
Realistic gains are muscle-driven: releasing an overworked muscle (like one masseter) to reduce bulk difference, waking up underused expression muscles for evener movement, and stopping progression through posture and habit correction.
What you cannot expect
Exercise does not reshape bone. Structural jaw or cheekbone differences and dental occlusion issues belong to orthodontics or surgery, not workouts. Techniques promising instant change (“pushing bones in” with forceful massage) lack evidence and risk injury.
What makes it work
First, direction: strengthen the weak side, release the tight side — doing the reverse widens the gap. Measure your asymmetry direction before starting. Second, consistency: muscle change takes weeks, and 5–10 minutes daily beats a long session once a week.
Third, safety: stop if it hurts, and avoid strong resistance moves while your jaw clicks or aches.
